Fortune 500 companies have seen double digit productivity increases adding plants to office environments. Academic studies in Norway to Taiwan to Texas have quantified the immersive psychological and environmental benefits of indoor plants. Plants are essential to humanity’s survival and existence and we believe they are essential to the classroom as well.
Community
One of the greatest benefits is getting students, teachers, parents and the entire community are involved building student leadership. By working towards a common goal everyone can benefit, we can realize that taking care of a plant isn’t difficult. Even if students don’t yet have a green thumb, they become involved educating themselves and the world.
Technology
When students are put in charge, they come up with innovative solutions and findings which we share with the global community of schools using technology. Through our collaborative tools and utilization of social media, students can easily audit their classrooms to share what is growing and what isn’t and learn directly from other students.
Our Mission Statement
Formal Info: One Plant Per Class is a non-profit, with charity registration pending, with a goal to empower students to place a plant in every classroom across the world.
Grade 11 student Nicholas Montgomery was never a huge eco-activist or had a green thumb when he learnt about about the value of indoor plants. In 2011 realized he had started the initiative at his school. After seeing the benefits of getting his community involved and teaching people that having a plant isn’t something to be scared about, he brought it to other schools across Toronto. Starting with an initial pilot project of 3 TDSB schools, the initiative currently takes place within 8 and growing schools.

"Having plants in my classroom helps foster a welcoming and creative environment for students. Schools have a lot of bland beige colouring, and this relatively small investment adds natural colour and has air quality benefits, too. One Plant Per Classroom is a fantastic student-generated idea."
Heather MurphyGrade 12 Student, Ursula Franklin Academy
"Plants have been of much benefit in my life. Having several plants in my house has made the air seem much fresher and cleaner, making the homework environment that much more inviting! Plants in classrooms can only have a positive effect on students."
